The Black Hole (2024)

The film takes the viewer to a suburban housing district, where Uma, who pumps iron in the local gym, her friends Maret and Sirje, who dream of working in Finland, and Jüri, a romantic with an interest in esoterics, each yearn for happiness and love in their own way. When a mysterious black hole appears among the lilac bushes of the district, accompanied by aliens, a giant spider, and a shorts-wearing Austrian, events begin to unfold that challenge the suburban residents’ hopes for a brighter future. The story is inspired by Armin Kõomägi’s short story collection “My Mustamäe” and Andrus Kivirähk’s short story “A Decent Life.”

Edvinas Pukšta (Programmer, Film hunter, Member of the European Film Academy): “A steamy, feminist romantic comedy featuring adorable sci-fi monsters. A sexy blend of the styles of Cronenberg, Spielberg, and Lyne (and “Gremlins”), “The Black Hole’s” director Moonika Siimets has managed to unleash the ultimate guilty pleasure movie. It’s an incredible and radical change of style from her previous film, “The Little Comrade”. We follow three interconnected stories: Sirje, who voluntarily signs up for an extraterrestrial science experiment; Jüri, who falls in love with his lustful neighbour; and Uma, a fearless bodybuilder who dreams of a world without abusive men so she can heal her partner, Mariliis. The clever screenplay weaves together cosmic orgasms, an existential lust for desire, and ancient culinary wisdom – all inspired by Estonian short stories. The Black Hole is not where you expect to find it, but may Kri-in-Poulsen from the Milky Way let us find the right way.”
